ElevenLabs review

AI voice and text-to-speech

ToolSift score8.5/10

Why 8.5/10: Top pick for voice and TTS: broad language support, voice cloning, an API and agent tools, with a free tier and a low-cost commercial plan. Points off for a shared credit pool that is easy to misjudge across products and for the responsibility that comes with voice cloning.

What it does

ElevenLabs calls itself an AI research and product company that started with "the first human-like voice model" and has expanded beyond voice. Its about page describes three platforms: ElevenCreative for creators (text-to-speech, speech-to-text, voice cloning, voice design, AI dubbing and the all-in-one Studio, across more than 90 languages); ElevenAgents for businesses deploying voice and chat agents for support and sales; and ElevenAPI, which gives developers low-latency streaming access to its audio models with SDKs. On 19 Oct 2026 the site was promoting Eleven v4, which it calls its most emotive model yet.

Everything runs on credits. Per ElevenLabs' pricing FAQ, text-to-speech costs about 1 credit per character on the standard multilingual models (0.5–1 credit on the Flash/Turbo models via the API), speech-to-text about 330 credits per minute, music about 900 credits per minute, sound effects 200 credits per generation, voice changer and isolator about 1,000 credits per minute, and dubbing between 2,000 and 10,000 credits per minute depending on mode and watermark.

The pricing table lists 74 languages for the UI text-to-speech feature and shows commercial use starting on Starter. Instant voice cloning starts on Starter and Professional Voice Cloning on Creator.

Against our runners-up: OpenAI's TTS and Realtime API is a good fit if you already build on OpenAI and want speech inside a larger app, and Piper is the open-source choice for fully offline voices on your own hardware. ElevenLabs' edge is breadth and quality in one place: cloning, dubbing, music, sound effects and agents share one account and one API, which suits creators and product teams who don't want to stitch several vendors together.

Our verdict

ElevenLabs is the benchmark for natural, expressive AI voices. One account covers text-to-speech, speech-to-text, voice cloning, dubbing, music and sound effects, plus an API and a platform for voice and chat agents. A free plan lets you try it, and commercial use starts at $6 a month. The catch is the shared credit pool: every product draws on the same monthly credits at different rates, so heavy dubbing or music use can eat a plan quickly. If voice quality is the priority, start here.

✅ Pick it if
Voice quality is the priority, for narration, dubbing, apps or voice agents, and you want one vendor with an API.
⛔ Skip it if
You need fully offline or open-source voices, or a flat unlimited price for very high volumes.

Pricing: As of 19 Oct 2026 (monthly, USD, excluding tax): Free $0 (10k credits); Starter $6 (30k credits, commercial licence, instant voice cloning); Creator $22 ($11 first month; 121k credits, professional voice cloning); Pro $99 (600k credits, 44.1kHz PCM via API); Scale $299 (1.8M credits, 3 seats); Business $990 (6M credits, 10 seats); Enterprise custom.
